National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
– Scheme of Work

1. Aim of the Course
This qualification provides a flexible and rewarding course of study and achievement. The course itself consists of three separately assessed units, with certificates being awarded following each successful unit passed. However, in order to gain the full qualification, candidates will need to pass all three units within a five year period. The course is particularly suitable for Site Managers, CDM Coordinators, Health and Safety Managers, Employee Representatives and Health and Safety Practitioners progressing to the NEBOSH Diploma course. The certificate is cited within the Approved Code of Practice for the Construction (Design and Management) regulations 2007, as a key knowledge indicator when assessing stage 1 competence for CDM coordinators.

2. Course Duration
The course will consist of 15 one day inputs over a 15 week period

3. Location
This course will be delivered at Optimum-MBA Training Centre,
Calleva Park, Aldermaston, Berkshire.

4. Course Content
The NEBOSH Certificate in Construction syllabus consists of nineteen topics of learning in preparation for assessment within a framework of three units. The programme of learning includes written and practical mock assessments, use of the RMS NEBOSH Study Book for this course, underpinning questions for research, group work and guided study.

The three units of learning and qualification are:

Unit 1 NGC1 – Management of Health and Safety.
Unit 2 NCC1 – Managing and Controlling Hazards in Construction activities.
Unit 3 NCC2 – A Work Based Practical Assignment and Assessment.

a. NGC1 – Management of Health and Safety
This course provides a foundation in health and safety management and consists of primarily of:
i. Policy,
ii. Organising for health and safety,
iii. Promoting a positive health and safety culture,
iv. Risk assessment,
v. Principles of control,
vi. Monitoring review and audit and,
vii. Incident and accident investigation and reporting.

b. NCC1 – Managing and Controlling Hazards in Construction activities.

i. Construction law and management,
ii. Construction site hazards and control,
iii. Working at height,
iv. Movement of people and vehicles,
v. Manual and mechanical handling,
vi. Work equipment
vii. Electrical,
viii. Fire,
ix. Chemical and biological,
x. Physical and Psychological,
xi. Excavation work and confined spaces and,
xii. Demolition.

c. NCC2 – Work place based practical assignment.

5. Resources Used
Resources used in support of learning include Power point presentations, Health And Safety Training DVDS/Videos, Questionnaires,
Handouts, HSE Guidance Notes, extracts from the SHP Journal, All England Reports and the Essential Health and Safety Guide
study book ISBN 1 900420 58 9.

6. Daily routine
The course starts at 9am and finishes at approximately 4.30pm inclusive of tea breaks and 45 minutes lunch break.

7. Fees
Current cost for the course is only £1450 not inclusive of VAT.
Note: For 2 or more candidates enrolling from a company there is a discount of 10%.
